Decluttering Before Moving: Room by Room
By Digital Piece of Cake

Moving is the perfect opportunity to declutter. Every item you get rid of before your move means less packing, less weight on the truck, and potentially lower moving costs. This room-by-room guide will help you systematically work through your home and decide what stays and what goes.
Why Declutter Before Moving?
The average American home contains over 300,000 items. Many of those things have not been used or even thought about in years. Moving everything costs money. Professional movers charge based on weight and volume, so transporting boxes of stuff you do not need directly increases your moving bill. Beyond cost, starting fresh in a new home with only the things you actually use and love makes unpacking faster and your new space more organized from day one.
The Kitchen
Kitchens accumulate more unnecessary items than almost any other room. Start by pulling everything out of your cabinets and drawers. You will be surprised by the number of duplicate utensils, gadgets you bought and never used, chipped dishes, and expired food you find.
- •Toss expired spices, sauces, and pantry items
- •Get rid of duplicate utensils and cooking tools
- •Donate small appliances you have not used in the past year
- •Recycle mismatched food storage containers without lids
- •Let go of chipped, cracked, or stained dishes and mugs
- •Pare down to one set of everyday dishes and one set for entertaining
Bedrooms and Closets
Clothing is one of the biggest decluttering challenges. A practical approach is the reverse hanger method: if you have not worn something in the past 12 months, it is time to let it go. Go through every piece of clothing, shoes, bags, and accessories. Be honest about what fits, what you actually wear, and what is just taking up closet space.
- •Clothes that do not fit: Donate or sell items you have been keeping for when you lose weight or gain muscle
- •Worn-out items: Toss anything with holes, stains, or broken zippers
- •Outdated styles: If you would not buy it today, do not move it
- •Extra linens: Keep two sets of sheets per bed and a reasonable number of towels
- •Old pillows: Replace pillows every one to two years for hygiene reasons
The Bathroom
Bathrooms are magnets for expired products and samples that never get used. Check expiration dates on all medications, sunscreen, and skincare products. Toss dried-out nail polish, old makeup, and nearly empty bottles of products you switched away from months ago. Combine half-used bottles of the same product to reduce volume.
Living Room and Entertainment
The living room tends to collect media, books, and decorative items over time. DVDs, CDs, and video games you have not touched in years can be sold or donated. Books you have read and will not reference again can go to your local library or Little Free Library. Decorative items that do not match your style or the vibe of your new home should be passed along.
The Home Office
Paper clutter is a major issue in home offices. Go through file cabinets and boxes of documents. Shred anything you do not legally need to keep. Digitize important papers and store them in the cloud. Recycle old manuals for products you no longer own. Donate office supplies you have been hoarding.
Garage, Attic, and Basement
These are the dumping grounds of most homes. Everything that did not have a place ended up here. Go through storage areas last when you have built up momentum from the easier rooms. Broken tools, old paint cans, outgrown sports equipment, and holiday decorations you have not displayed in years can all go.
What to Do with Everything
- •Sell: List valuable items on Facebook Marketplace, Poshmark, or eBay at least three weeks before your move
- •Donate: Schedule donation pickups from Goodwill, Salvation Army, or local charities
- •Recycle: Take electronics to e-waste recycling, and check local recycling rules for other items
- •Trash: Anything broken, stained, or unsalvageable should be tossed responsibly
- •Give away: Offer items to friends, family, or post in Buy Nothing groups
Set a deadline for yourself. Anything you plan to sell should be listed at least two to three weeks before your move. Whatever does not sell by one week before moving day gets donated. The goal is to walk into your new home with only things that serve a purpose or bring you genuine joy.
