Custom Crates Built On-Site

Our crating team builds each wooden crate at your home or business, measuring the item precisely and constructing the crate around it. This ensures a perfect fit with no room for shifting or movement inside the crate. The process begins with measurement and assessment of the item. The crate frame is built from clean, kiln-dried lumber. Interior surfaces are lined with foam padding and vibration-dampening materials. The item is placed inside and secured with additional foam blocks and soft restraints. The crate is sealed and labeled with handling instructions and orientation markers.

When Custom Crating Is Necessary

We recommend custom crating for oversized framed artwork and canvas paintings larger than 36 inches, marble and stone sculptures, antique mirrors and gilded frames, chandeliers and crystal light fixtures, large glass tabletops and marble countertop pieces, high-value electronics like large-format displays, antique furniture with fragile elements (inlays, veneers, carved details), and musical instruments like harps or large string instruments. If an item is too large for standard boxes, too fragile for standard padding, or too valuable to risk with anything less than maximum protection, custom crating is the answer.

Materials and Construction

Our crates are built with kiln-dried lumber that is clean, pest-free, and structurally sound. Interior lining options include high-density foam for shock absorption, closed-cell foam for vibration dampening and moisture barrier, acid-free tissue and glassine paper for contact protection on artwork, and custom-cut foam inserts shaped to the item's contours. Exterior surfaces are sanded smooth to prevent snagging during handling, and each crate includes clearly marked handling instructions (This End Up, Fragile, orientation arrows). For international shipments or items entering storage, we can add ISPM-15 compliant heat treatment for pest certification.

Crating as Part of Your Move or Standalone

Custom crating is available as an add-on to any move or as a standalone service. If you need crating as part of a move, our crating team typically arrives the day before the move to build crates in place, allowing the moving crew to load them the next day. For standalone crating — such as shipping artwork to a gallery or preparing items for long-term storage — we build the crate on-site and can arrange transport separately if needed.
