Chinatown's residential buildings are predominantly five-to-six-story tenement walkups built between 1880 and 1920. Many have been continuously occupied and minimally renovated, with original narrow staircases, small apartment layouts, and building entrances that open directly onto busy sidewalks with no vestibule or lobby. Furniture must be navigated from the curb through a street-level door and immediately up a steep staircase — there is often no staging area inside the building.

Canal Street is the defining logistical challenge of any Chinatown move. The street functions as a major east-west commercial artery, a produce distribution hub, and an access road to the Holland Tunnel and Manhattan Bridge, all simultaneously. Double-parking is constant, lane discipline is nonexistent, and pedestrian traffic spills off the sidewalks.
