Chinatown Movers

Dense Street Navigation and Tight-Access Building Specialists

Manhattan's Chinatown — one of the largest and oldest Chinese neighborhoods outside of Asia — sprawls across a dense grid of streets south of Canal, east of Broadway, and north of the Brooklyn Bridge approach. Moving in Chinatown means confronting some of the most challenging street conditions in New York City: Canal Street's legendary double-parked delivery trucks, the narrow one-way streets of Mott, Pell, and Doyers, and six-story walkup tenements packed tightly together with minimal space between buildings. Piece of Cake Moving & Storage brings patience, precision, and deep neighborhood knowledge to every Chinatown move.

Moving Services in Chinatown

About Moving in Chinatown, Manhattan

Chinatown's residential buildings are predominantly five-to-six-story tenement walkups built between 1880 and 1920. Many have been continuously occupied and minimally renovated, with original narrow staircases, small apartment layouts, and building entrances that open directly onto busy sidewalks with no vestibule or lobby. Furniture must be navigated from the curb through a street-level door and immediately up a steep staircase — there is often no staging area inside the building.

Canal Street is the defining logistical challenge of any Chinatown move. The street functions as a major east-west commercial artery, a produce distribution hub, and an access road to the Holland Tunnel and Manhattan Bridge, all simultaneously. Double-parking is constant, lane discipline is nonexistent, and pedestrian traffic spills off the sidewalks. Our Chinatown crews avoid Canal Street entirely when possible, using Hester, Bayard, and Division Streets for truck positioning. The blocks around Confucius Plaza and the Chatham Square area near the Manhattan Bridge can also be challenging due to bridge approach ramps and bus stops. We arrive before 7 AM for Chinatown moves to secure street position before the neighborhood's commercial activity begins.
