Little Italy's residential footprint has shrunk over the decades as Chinatown has expanded northward, but the remaining blocks between Broome and Houston on Mulberry, Mott, and Elizabeth Streets retain their historic tenement character. These buildings were designed for a different era of furniture and household goods, and their staircases, doorframes, and hallways present genuine spatial challenges. Mulberry Street is closed to traffic during the Feast of San Gennaro festival in September and on summer weekends for the pedestrian plaza, making advance planning critical for moves during these periods. Even on regular days, Mulberry Street's narrow width and the restaurant delivery vehicles that line the curb make truck access difficult. We typically use Grand Street or Broome Street for truck positioning and hand-carry items through the short blocks to the building entrance. The intersection with Canal Street on Little Italy's southern border is one of Manhattan's most chaotic traffic points — we route around it entirely using Hester or Grand Streets.
